Kalemegdan Park in Belgrade: the historic heart of Serbia

Kalemegdan Park in Belgrade is the historical and cultural heart of the Serbian capital. Located next to the majestic Belgrade Fortress, the park is one of the oldest in Europe. Its grounds are rich not only in green spaces but also in numerous historical monuments and archaeological sites, attracting tourists from all over the world.

The name "Kalemegdan" comes from the Turkish words "kale" (fortress) and "megdan" (square or field). The history of this place spans centuries: from Celtic fortifications to the Roman settlement of Singidunum, through Byzantine, Hungarian, and Ottoman rule. In 1521, the fortress was captured by the Turks, and it remained under their control until 1867.

After the Turks left, Prince Mihailo Obrenović initiated the creation of a park around the fortress. Work began in 1869 under the supervision of urban planner Emilian Josimović, and the park's appearance was inspired by European urban spaces of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Kalemegdan is divided into two parts: Greater and Lesser Kalemegdan. The former houses the Military Museum, the Museum of Forestry and Hunting, and the Monument of Gratitude to France. Mali Kalemegdan includes a children's playground and an amusement park with a Ferris wheel.

Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers from numerous observation platforms. For those seeking a deeper historical insight, the Military Museum inside the fortress is open.
